Note: there is a huge difference between being Weight Conscious and Health Conscious.

Which one are you?

Being weight conscious is focusing on consuming low calories no matter the purity of what you’re putting into your body; for example, many diet “foods” aren’t really even food. They consist of fake chemicals and overly processed facsimiles, so far removed from the origin of the food, there is barely a resemblance. I know people who eat so many fake things and prefer to sleep more just to avoid consuming calories because of their crazy diets. One woman actually said to me, “I only eat NO calorie food.” ???? The only pure NO CALORIE food is water. Once you wean yourself from excessive sugar, salt, processed stuff, your taste buds will begin to open up to an entirely new level of appreciation and taste for food in its original state.

It’s a delectable sensation. The first time I truly tasted and appreciated Organic Natural Unsalted Peanut Butter was indescribable. So satisfying & decadent. Later, when I was staying with a friend, all she had to offer was a jar of the ever so commercially popular “peanut butters.” I figured, how bad could it be? It truly tasted NOTHING like peanuts or peanut butter. I could taste the sugar, the chemicals, the additives. ICK! Michael Pollan said, “If it’s advertised on television, don’t eat it.”

Maybe a bit extreme, but there is validity to this statement. Our bodies, minds, souls are designed to be nourished. Food- REAL whole food-is nourishment.

The choice to nourish yourself is yours. This Morselist is putting together my favorite grocery staples, per your requests. Foods that I keep on hand at all times in my home and believe me, once you start focusing on health and striving towards becoming Health Conscious, you will feel better, lighter, clearer, more energized, less achy & you will GLOW! And undoubtedly, your weight will become more balanced so the old Weight Conscious way of thinking person will no longer need to focus on weight because the shift in becoming Health Conscious-more focused on eating real, whole, clean foods as close to their natural state will automatically help with your weight, bloat, inflammation, energy, etc.

Try it for one meal this week. Just one. Then maybe try one meal every day for a week. Work your way to eating clean, real, whole unprocessed food for 3 weeks, (21 days), the time it takes to create a new habit. See how you feel? Yes, it’s an adjustment. Yes, it takes PREPARATION and planning ahead. NO, it’s NOT impossible. Ask yourself, are you Weight Conscious or Health Conscious? Now, ask yourself, which kind of Conscious Person do you strive to be

  1. Thanks Maura. Great perspective.

We bought a Vita-mix blender which is a ridiculously over-powered thing (I can’t help but feel like if you rewired it a bit you could fly to the moon). But it has been fantastic for the kind/variety of foods that I consume. I abhor kale, but throw it in there with some ice, blueberries, and soy milk and it tastes great. It takes about 45 seconds to do, and I’ll take it over a no-calorie, partially-gelatinated whatever bar anytime.

  2. Great topic Maura! Right on. Like I always tell my clients, twizzlers may be fat-free and low calorie, but that doesn’t mean they’re healthy; high fructose corn syrup, sugar, hydrogenated oil, and red dye are basically the ingredients. I saw a t-shirt once that said, ‘EAT REAL FOOD.’ Yes and yes!
