Now,  NUTSO-SWEET  via your question answered by Nutri Savvy, Lauren O’Connor:

Q: What are you thoughts on using potassium chloride as a salt substitute?

(MORSELIST NOTE:  Try  citrus juice & peels, too)

A: First I’d like to suggest varying palate with various herbs and spices, instead- a great way to add in flavor from plant foods. I’m really not a fan of substitutes. Potassium Chloride is a salt, but the idea is surely to limit sodium intake. While the body requires both minerals:sodium and potassium for fluid, electrolyte balance, and heart regulation, excess in any mineral is never good. You likely don’t need to add more in. (So forget the salt shaker, unless you are sprinkling on herbs and dried ground veggies instead.)

You can’t go wrong when you get your sources of potassium from whole, plant-based foods (your fruits and vegetables). And chances are you already get enough sodium in your diet (think of your healthier, minimally-processed foods – ie: milk substitutes such as almond milk, soy- and coconut-milk). Besides it is best to strive for a balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruit, lean meats, nuts & legumes and healthy fats (which will include the vitamins/minerals, antioxidant nutrients your body needs) — less highly-processed foods, less additives.
Try to wean your desired intake of salty food rather than substitute the flavor which may keep your taste buds clinging for more, that is where we often get into trouble. Just like we recommend you re-train your palate to tame your sweet-tooth, it is a good idea to do the same with “salty” desires.

  1. Lemon’s a great idea–thanks for putting that out.

I’ll be wearing the green tomorrow….Sounders FC green…at their season home opener. LOVE soccer!!

  2. It is truly amazing how far lemon goes to substitute for that salt that we all crave!! I just have to remember to grab the lemon instead of the salt!
