If you’re like me, the holidays create a lot of festive fun in addition to a lot of the kooky crazy!  How do YOU handle stress?

Before we proceed, please watch this incredibly inspiring video (4 minutes) about one man’s challenge to champion! I have not been able to stop thinking about him since I watched it and he is living proof that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE, if you don’t give up, my personal theme song!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmVdfFKiaLU

I’ve learned that you don’t have to spend 10 hours per day at the office if you can do your job effectively and efficiently in 6-8 hours. Also, it has always been very important to me to take vacations, to get away, to visit loved ones, returning to work refreshed with a new perspective on life, and learn to love your job all over again.

Did you know that type A personalities, although smart and successful, are the most vulnerable to stress and anxiety? They constantly have to do more, be more, be one step ahead of the rest and  place high demands on themselves and others. It’s okay to strive for excellence but not at the expense of your health. The more you are able to relax, the better off you will be. (Note from the MORSELIST:  Uh oh, sounds too familiar!)

Some simple ways to relieve stress are;

  • Check traffic on the internet before you get on the freeway, if you see there is an accident, take side streets or other alternate route. Or, hang out until it clears.
  • If you are taking a flight, check online to see if it is scheduled to leave on time. Always allow enough time to get there and get through the security line.
  • If you are taking a trip by car, fill up your gas tank the day before so you don’t feel rushed on the day you leave.
  • If you know you may not have access to healthy food, bring some snacks in your bag such as nuts, dried fruit, a cereal bar, a banana, etc.
  • With each conflict that arises, ask yourself; what is the issue, how can I solve it, am I being too emotional, what is the worst that could happen.
  • Do not focus on the negative, focus on how you can resolve problems and turn it into a positive. How can you learn from this situation?
  • If you need to make an important decision and you’re not sure what to do, make a Pros and Cons list and see what really matters to you.
  • Every night, make a brief list of those things that you were thankful for that day (i.e. I made it to work on time, I got a promotion, I gave something to someone who needed it, I created a new dinner dish, etc).
  • Make time for exercise, put it in your schedule along with your other important meetings or tasks for the day.
  • Eat a nutritious diet as this will better enable your body to handle the daily stressors of life.
  • Always make time for family and friends. Catch up with an old friend. Go out to lunch.
  • When you do something well, pat yourself on the back, most often, nobody else will. Go treat yourself to a massage or pedicure.
  • When you feel down or lonely, pick up the phone and call a friend. Chances are, you will feel much better by the time you hang up.
  • Know that every day is a different day and what may not be so great today will probably resolve itself in no time.
  • Do not over commit your time, be realistic, don’t be afraid to say no (in a nice way, of course).
  • Listen to music that you love, studies show this reduces stress and increases happiness.
  • Follow your dreams, know that you deserve to be doing something that makes you happy. You only have one life.
