Quality vs. Quantity

I’ll admit I’ve been guilty of my eyes being bigger than my stomach and immediately choosing the larger portion of something/anything over the smaller one, without even really looking at what it is.

Instinctively, choosing or depending on my mood, GRABBING the biggest plate, bowl, jar, mystery gift. You get the picture.

Haven’t we all done this at some point? Heck, maybe some of us still do. I’ve had to retrain my brain (yes, that rhymes) into being a Choosy Chooser (another tongue twister)

Say that 3 times quickly:

CHOOSY CHOOSER
CHOOSY CHOOSER
CHOOSY CHOOSER

Ok..now, that’s out of my system.

I’ve learned to allow myself to become more choosy in what I truly crave and love, not just filling up on filler foods or filler stuff (including anything from skincare products, clothing, etc.).

While I love a bargain, there are certain things I’m NOT willing to skimp on anymore. In a future post, I will address being Bargain Savvy without sacrificing QUALITY choices.

There are ways to do this, but yes, you must PLAN.

(If you can’t wait, please email me your questions).

I LOVE quality food and will spend a little more on what I really want and what will nourish me and fuel me, not just FILL me up on the cheap. And, if you think about it, is the filler stuff really cheap? Not really when you consider the overall health ramifications and the way you may feel after eating or stuffing yourself.

Let’s discuss hearty salads. I love avocados, organic spinach, organic arugula, goat cheese, beets, sprouts, broccoli, sweet potatoes, almonds or pine nuts. I make my own dressing with Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Walnut Oil. Some of my friends argue “That sounds delicious, but  those ingredients too expensive.” (Some of these same people spend money eating out every day.)

I figure if I buy what I really want and plan my meals ahead of time, I actually save money long term and am truly satisfied with what I’m eating.

And, yes, that means making lunches the night before and packing in a small cooler bag. But it’s a very worthwhile priority for me. It’s interesting that when I eat whatever’s nearby in a rush, invariably I’ll eat more filler snacks right after my meal, filling a void that wasn’t satisfied by my food.

Think about chocolate.  Mmmmmm. We can grab a cheap candy bar at the drug store in a bind OR we can get those decadent dark chocolate squares that NO other chocolate, in my opinion,  can hold a wrapper to. Dark chocolate satisfies every cell in my body and the cheap candy leaves me feeling sluggish and unsatisfied.

I believe something happens to our psyche when we choose quality over quantity and we become more mindful of what we’re eating or applying or wearing.

I’m NOT saying break the green piggy bank. I’m merely saying choose wisely. Refer to Invest in you

  1. Food occurs to me as the key to saving my husband’s life. It also occurs to me as comfort, and fuel for my professional success.

How food occurs to me drives my actions with respect to food.

  2. Maura, what you’re discussing is beautiful and touches on a deeper issue, namely our relationship to food; that is, what food represents to us, or how food occurs to us.

I ask my fellow Morselists to consider: How does food occur to you?
